At the Leitrim Tourism Office, you can pick up a booklet with a self-guided historic tour of Carrick-on-Shannon. Along the historical stroll through the town, you will visit the Famine Workhouse and Attic Memorial. The Workhouse opened in 1842 to accommodate 800 people, it was soon overrun by the destitute who, with little food, soon became the victims of The Great Famine. Just a short stroll from the Workhouse is The Great Famine Commemoration Graveyard which was opened in 1849 when the local graveyard could no longer cope with the large number of deaths.
